"Out of Society" - adult education centre shows film about deserters
Followed by a film talk with cameraman Thomas Beckmann
On Monday, 23 November 2015, the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre will be showing the film "Out of Society" in cooperation with the attac regional group Chemnitz at 7 pm in the TIETZ, in the 3rd floor event hall. In her documentary film, director Nancy Brandt traces the portraits of two deserters. She asks what it means to stand up to a system that is many times stronger. Cinematographer Thomas Beckmann will discuss the film in a subsequent film talk. Admission is free.
The film portrays Emil Richter, who deserted from the Wehrmacht and found refuge in Serbia by taking a wrong turn. Born in 1914, the soldier hid from the German army in Serbia for seven years. André Shepherd was born in 1977. He fled the American army before being deployed again in the Iraq war. He lived underground in Bavaria for 19 months and was the first American soldier to apply for asylum in Germany. Almost seven decades lie between the two escape stories and yet they have a lot in common.
