Opening of the new Gaußstraße bridge over the Kappelbach cycle path
Tomorrow, Friday 8 December, the new Gaußstraße bridge over the Kappelbach cycle path in the Siegmar district will be reopened to traffic. The work on Gaußstraße itself has been completed.
The bridge abutments on the cycle path are still being clad, so it will remain closed until then, i.e. until the second calendar week of the new year at the latest. However, the aim is to complete this work before Christmas.
The Gaußstraße bridge over the cycle path (built in 1926) was in a very poor state of repair. The superstructure was soaked with moisture and corrosion damage was clearly visible on the exposed main girders. Loose concrete shells on the underside of the structure posed a danger to cyclists. As a result, the cycle path under the bridge had to be closed. It was therefore absolutely necessary to rebuild the bridge.
The new replacement structure was built as a reinforced concrete frame construction. The district heating route, which previously ran parallel to the cycle path, was laid underground in the construction area, creating a larger open space under the bridge. The new structure has a clear width of 5.96 metres and a clear height of 2.5 metres. The bridge has a width of 12.10 metres, on which a road surface of 7.10 metres and footpaths of 2.50 metres on both sides have been created.
The construction costs of the project totalled approx. 420,000 euros. The Free State of Saxony provided 90 per cent funding for this construction project as part of its support for municipal road and bridge construction. Krause & Co. Hoch-, Tief- und Anlagenbau GmbH from Neukirchen-Adorf was commissioned with the construction.
