Opening of the Intercultural Weeks on 17 September at Neumarkt
Under the motto "Diversity. The best against diversity.", the Intercultural Weeks in Chemnitz will be launched on 17 September 2016 from 12 noon to 6 pm on the Neumarkt.
The opening ceremony with the Market of Opportunities, an intercultural stage programme with folk dances and music from various countries around the world and culinary delicacies was organised by the City of Chemnitz's migration officer in cooperation with the Lila Villa women's centre of the akCente e. V. association, the association AGIUA e. V. and the Migration Advisory Council of the City of Chemnitz.
In the following two weeks, clubs, associations, educational institutions, parishes and authorities invite you to get to know their work, find out about the topics of migration, integration and asylum and take advantage of offers for tolerant and peaceful coexistence. Further training, encounters, theatre performances, concerts, country evenings, sporting events, readings and exchanges between different religions - the range of offers is broad.
The series of events will take place until 2 October 2016 and is aimed at everyone in Chemnitz with its diverse offerings.
Right at the beginning, on 10 September 2016, the traditional Tết-Trung-Thu or Mid-Autumn Festival with a lantern parade organised by the Association of Vietnamese in Chemnitz and the surrounding area and an evening with music, singing, poetry and typical Latin American food and drinks: "Peña sin Fronteras - Freundeskreis ohne Grenzen" - organised by Amistad e. V. provide an opportunity for encounters.
On 24 September 2016, the Familienverein für Groß und Klein e. V. and the Staatliches Museum für Archäologie Chemnitz, with the support of the City of Chemnitz's migration officer and numerous other partners, invite you to a large, joint exchange. Numerous Chemnitz institutions, associations, initiatives and leisure facilities are offering free activities in the form of an exchange to encourage Chemnitz families from different cultures to get in touch with each other.
Anyone interested in personal stories can find them at the Living Library event on 21 and 28 September 2016 at Chemnitz City Library. Personalities from Chemnitz with a migration background will talk about their lives and their experiences in our city.
But literature lovers will also find interesting offers, such as the Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov, the German playwright and lyricist Bertold Brecht and the Hungarian poet József Romhányi, with poems about the peculiarities of the Hungarian language or the English-language reading "Stories without borders" by the German writer of Indian origin Anant Kumar.
The programme offers a total of 64 events. These have been organised by around 90 associations, cultural institutions, religious communities and other organisations.
