Opening of the Heinrich Heine Primary School

On Wednesday, 15 September 2021, 1 pm, the Heinrich Heine Primary School will be officially opened after the interior renovation in the presence of Mayor Michael Stötzer.

After the interior renovation of Heinrich Heine Primary School, the pupils and teachers were able to put their renovated and freshly furnished school building into operation just in time for the start of school. The newly designed outdoor facilities are now also available for varied breaks and after-school activities in the fresh air.

In October 2018, Chemnitz City Council decided to expand the primary school, which previously had three classes, to accommodate four. This required the complete refurbishment of the interior and the redesign of the outdoor area.

The room layout was adapted accordingly. The cloakrooms are now located in the basement and on the ground floor. The after-school care centre was located on the ground floor with dual use of the classrooms. The school management and the teachers' area are located on the first floor. The classrooms were distributed between the 1st and 3rd floors. The existing dining room in the basement was significantly enlarged.

The doors were widened and renewed on all floors of the building to ensure barrier-free use. As part of the construction work, the underground pipes in the basement were re-laid and a new floor structure with insulation was installed.
The preparation rooms have now been significantly enlarged by demolishing walls in the gable areas. Acoustic ceilings were installed to improve the room acoustics. With a colour concept based on the existing façade design, the wall surfaces throughout the building were repainted and the floor coverings were renewed with a hard-wearing linoleum covering.

The heating system was completely renewed and the sanitary facilities were partially renewed. The classrooms were fitted with new washbasins. The serving kitchen in the basement now also has new sanitary facilities. A supply and exhaust air system with heat recovery was installed for the food serving area, dining rooms and cloakrooms.

The electricity distribution network and the lighting (use of energy-saving LED lights) were also modernised as part of the construction work. Furthermore, the hazard detection and alarm systems were installed in accordance with the fire protection concept, as was a new data network.

The outdoor facilities (schoolyard) of the primary school have been redesigned. The children now have access to exercise play areas with a low ropes course, climbing tetragode and Mikado pile. The built-in outdoor play equipment, such as the double swing, double horizontal bar, table tennis tables and the streetball court, are also very useful. The school garden has been reorganised and enlarged. The school garden and play equipment are housed in new wooden sheds. There are also fixed and movable seating areas to relax on.

The construction work began in September 2019 and took two years as planned without any delays. The costs totalled around 3.96 million euros. This includes the planning and construction costs as well as the costs for refurbishing the school and after-school care centres. A total of around 1.74 million euros in funding was invested in the construction project, including equipment. Funding for the interior renovation and redesign of the outdoor facilities was provided through the school infrastructure funding programme (state funds) and the furnishing of the school and after-school care rooms through the acceleration of primary school care funding programme (federal funds).

During the construction work, school operations were relocated to the newly built mobile classrooms on the grounds of the Jan Amos Comenius primary school for two years.
