On Friday, 19 December at 11 a.m., the first "toilet for all" in Saxony will be officially opened at Johannisplatz. The new toilet location is the first specially equipped public toilet for people with severe and multiple disabilities in Chemnitz and Saxony.

The specially equipped toilet container offers a wheelchair-accessible toilet, a recliner and a hoist and is accessible via the Eurokey for disabled toilets, a standardised Europe-wide locking system for disabled-accessible facilities.
The idea for the "Toilet for All" was developed in the run-up to the European Capital of Culture Year 2025 in collaboration between the VdK Sachsen e. V. social organisation and the City of Chemnitz. Construction work on Johannisplatz began last month.
The toilet container was procured by Sozialverband VdK Sachsen e. V. and supported by the "Barrier-free building - favourite places for everyone" funding programme of the Free State of Saxony. The construction costs for, among other things, the construction of the foundation, the development and the barrier-free access route amount to around 60,000 euros and are financed by the city of Chemnitz.
The work was carried out by the company Steinbach & Richter GbR from Lichtenau. Construction supervision was carried out by the City of Chemnitz's green spaces department. The toilet container was manufactured by the company Menzl GmbH. An illuminated handrail will be added to the barrier-free access to the toilet container in January.
The background
Chemnitz has public and disabled-accessible toilets. However, the existing toilet facilities are often unsuitable for people with severe and multiple disabilities. In a "toilet for all", people with severe disabilities such as paraplegia, traumatic brain injury, congenital severe disabilities or multiple sclerosis will find everything they need for their personal hygiene.
The "Leben pur" foundation is committed to the creation of "toilets for all" in public places throughout Germany. Without a suitable toilet, people with complex disabilities cannot participate in public life.
