Opening of the cultural theme year MODERNE(S) in Chemnitz - Art and Architecture 2014/2015

As part of the 5th Days of Chemnitz Industrial Heritage, the event "Industrial Worlds" will take place on Sunday, 14 September 2014 at 10 a.m. at the Chemnitz State Museum of Archaeology. Like the Days of Chemnitz Industrial Heritage, the "Industrial Worlds" programme is specifically dedicated to the theme of modernism and thus also provides the perfect occasion for the opening of another Chemnitz cultural project: the cultural theme year MODERN(S) in Chemnitz-Art and Architecture 2014/2015.

On the one hand, the third cultural theme year is dedicated to modernism as an era that significantly shaped the city. Chemnitz is rich in architecture that reflects modernism.

reflects modernism. In addition, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the economy contributed a great deal to the development of art and culture. Even back then

knew how important a rich intellectual and cultural life was for the city. On the other hand, the project title MODERNE(S) also encompasses the new and innovative in today's Chemnitz.

With the aim of addressing the different aspects of modernity, Chemnitz institutions, cultural institutions and associations have developed a multifaceted programme in cooperation with the city, which will feature interesting, challenging and entertaining events from 14 September 2014 and throughout 2015. The programme ranges from the exhibition project "Chemnitz: City of Modernity - a modern city?" in the Villa Esche, the theatre spectacle "Die Moderne geht baden" with the ballet company of the municipal theatre in the Stadtbad and court concerts by the SäMozart Society in Kaßberg and the "Karl Schmidt-Rottluff" and "Carsten Nicolai" exhibitions at the art collections towards the end of the cultural theme year. An event on modernist buildings in Chemnitz is also currently being planned by the Chemnitz Chamber Group of the Saxony Chamber of Architects for the "Day of Architecture 2015" and a series of lectures by the Technical University.

The cultural theme year is aimed at the people of Chemnitz as well as inviting guests and tourists to the city. For further information on the cultural theme year, please contact Simone Becht at the city's cultural office on 0371-488 4126, e-mail: simone.becht(at)stadt-chemnitz.de
