On Sunday, 26 October, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., a family festival will take place in the sports hall of the Marianne-Brandt-Oberschule, Vettersstraße 34, on the occasion of the "Open Sports Sunday for Families", to which the City of Chemnitz and the Chemnitz City Sports Association together with partners invite you. Guests can look forward to open hands-on activities in various sports for children and adults, exercise and play stations with a fun factor for all age groups and the smoothie bike from the Office for Health and Prevention. Participation is free of charge and possible without registration.
The symbolic handover of a baton will take place at around 9.30 a.m., as the project responsibility for the "Open Sports Sunday for Families" will in future lie with the Chemnitz City Sports Association, after the Office for Health and Prevention of the City of Chemnitz has been in charge of this task for the past five years. Funding for the project has also been secured for at least the next two years thanks to the sponsorship of the Beisheim Foundation and the support of the Carl Hahn Foundation, the Chemnitz Lions Clubs and the City of Chemnitz Sports Department. The new sponsors are thus continuing the five-year support of the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK).

Katja Uhlemann, Head of the Office for Health and Prevention: "With the 'Open Sports Sunday for Families' project, we have succeeded in establishing a low-threshold programme to promote physical activity that reaches families in their everyday lives. The transfer of responsibility for the project to the Chemnitz City Sports Association represents an important step towards long-term sustainability. We would like to thank all partners for their trusting cooperation and joint commitment to more equal health opportunities in our city."
Networking with the city of Chemnitz will be maintained via the city's children and youth officer, Dina Norberger, who also campaigned for the continuation of the project.
The family festival on Sunday is therefore not only a day full of sport, games and community, but also marks an important step in the further development of the project, which has been successfully getting families moving and enriching the local sports landscape since 2020.
The new funding will secure the three locations of the Lower Luisen School sports hall, Fritz-Matschke-Straße 21, the sports hall of the Vocational School Centre for Business 1, Lutherstraße 2, and the sports hall of the Dr Salvador Allende Primary School, Usti nad Labem 279, at least until the end of 2027.
Three gyms are open every Sunday*
School gyms are normally closed on Sundays - but in Chemnitz they have been inviting young and old to jump, climb, balance and play since 2020. Three gyms are now available at different locations, supervised by a pool of 16 to 18 instructors.
"The free offer is perfect for doing something together at the weekend, doing something for your well-being and having fun at the same time. Sport keeps you healthy! With our support, we help the local authorities to create structures so that the project can then run independently. We are all the more pleased that this easily accessible programme is still open to all children in Chemnitz," says Alexander Krauß, head of the TK regional office in Saxony.
Jens Köhler, President of the Chemnitz City Sports Association: "With this project, we want to make it easier for as many children and their families as possible to access sport and show how much fun it can be to exercise together. We have been doing this for five years now. We are celebrating this anniversary with the family festival, would like to thank our project partners and bring the aims of Sports Sunday to life in a particularly colourful way - without any pressure to perform, but with a large portion of fun and togetherness."
