Open Monument Day on 12 September
A selection of interesting monuments in Chemnitz is presented online
This year's nationwide Open Monument Day will take place on Sunday 12 September under the motto "Being and Appearance - in History, Architecture and Monument Preservation".
A wide-ranging topic that encourages reflection and questioning. Monuments are assessed according to architectural and design aspects, but also according to urban and socio-historical aspects; they are contemporary witnesses. The "being" has priority in monument preservation, because it is about materiality, craftsmanship and observation. And without this "being", there would be no "appearance", which can masterfully create an illusion.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the City of Chemnitz's heritage protection authority is once again organising the nationwide day of action in Chemnitz virtually this year.
From Saturday, 11 September , a selection of interesting monuments in Chemnitz will be presented on the City of Chemnitz website at www.chemnitz.de/denkmaltag, on social media and on the website of the German Foundation for Monument Protection at www.tag-des-offenen-denkmals.de. Once again, contributions will be made by trainees from the City of Chemnitz who, in addition to their training, have been studying the history of monuments and their use.
Please note: On 12 September, there will also be a few events in Chemnitz organised by other institutions or associations. These can also be found at www.tag-des-offenen-denkmals.de.
