Open Monument Day on 11 September
Opening 11 a.m. at the open-air stage in Küchwald - 1.30 p.m. inauguration of the stele in the park in front of the castle church
This year's Open Monument Day in the city of Chemnitz starts on Sunday, 11 September at 11 a.m. at the Küchwald open-air stage, Küchwaldring 34. In addition to Building Mayor Michael Stötzer and Bettina Schülke, Head of the Monument Protection Authority of the City of Chemnitz, Rolf Esche, Chairman of the Küchwaldbühne Association, will also take part in the opening. The Chemnitz Jazz Company will provide the musical backdrop.
Another highlight is the ceremony to mark the completion of the façade renovation of the castle church, which begins at 11 am. At 1.30 pm, Mayor Michael Stötzer will hand over an information stele in the park in front of the castle church.
The motto of this year's nationwide Open Monument Day is "Culture Trail. A case for monument protection". It is about the search for the structural history of the object, the structural and design details, the socio-political circumstances and the search for the history of the inhabitants and builders. Cultural monuments are witnesses to human activity, revealing layers of time that are still preserved or come to light during renovations.
Monument owners, associations, architects and employees of the City of Chemnitz monument protection authority provide information. The Open Monument Day can take place live again after a two-year break due to coronavirus.
In addition to the open-air theatre in Küchwald and the Schloßkirche and Schloßbergmuseum, the following listed buildings have been registered with the City of Chemnitz:
Tram Museum (Zwickauer Straße 164), Industrial Museum (Zwickauer Straße 119), Vehicle Museum (Zwickauer Straße 77), Railway Showplace (Frankenberger Straße 172), Schmidt-Rottluff Mill (Limbacher Straße 380), former Stahringer Natural Healing Centre in Grüna (Rabensteiner Straße 14), Küchwaldklinikum (Bürgerstraße 2), former tulle factory (Zwickauer Straße 145), residential building with ancillary facilities (Hauboldstraße 26), Karl-Schmidt-Rottluff-Gymnasium (Hohe Straße 35), former Royal Saxon State Institute for the Blind and Feebleminded (Flemmingstraße 8c), Chemnitz Viaduct (Beckerstraße).
There will also be a tour of the Vorderer Kaßberg and the following churches and cemeteries will be open:
Evangelical Methodist Peace Church (Kaßbergstraße 30), Wittgensdorf Church (Kirchweg 11), Luther Church (Zschopauer Straße 151), St. Nikolai Cemetery and St. Nikolaikirche (Michaelstraße 15) and the Stiftskirche Chemnitz-Ebersdorf (Mittweidaer Straße 79), where the official closing event of this year's Monument Day of the City of Chemnitz will take place at 5 pm.
