Open Monument Day 2013 - the programme in Chemnitz

On the nationwide Open Monument Day, which this year has the motto "Beyond the good and beautiful: Uncomfortable monuments?", Chemnitz will once again be hosting an extensive programme with invitations to guided tours led by experts and thus to special encounters with special buildings. Admission to events and tours is free of charge (with the exception of the regular theatre performance on the Küchwaldbühne following the guided tours).

Former Kaßberg Prison, later JVA, Hohe Straße 21:
Guided tours: 11 a.m. and 2.30 p.m. by the Lern- und Gedenkort Kaßberg-Gefängnis e.V. association, max. 50 people each time. Pre-registration required via the City of Chemnitz, Building Licence Office / Monument Protection Department, Tel. 0371/488 6350.
Reconstruction area city centre:
Guided tours at 11 am and 2.30 pm by Thomas Morgenstern and Bettina Schülke, City of Chemnitz, Department of Monument Protection (meeting point at the Marx Monument).
The "Reitbahnstraße" residential neighbourhood reconstruction area:
Guided tour 3pm by Dr Volker Knüpfer, Chemnitz History Society (meeting point at the main entrance Annenschule).
Administrative buildings of the former SDAG Wismut, Jagdschänkenstraße 29 and 50:
Guided tour at 2 pm by Karin Hartung, City of Chemnitz, Department of Monument Protection and senior employees of Wismut GmbH and the KBS (meeting point in front of the building at Jagdschänkenstraße 50).
POW graves at the Ebersdorf Abbey Cemetery:
Guided tour 11 a.m. byCathrin Fuchs, City of Chemnitz, Department of Monument Protection (meeting point at the cemetery entrance).
Municipal cemetery with grove of honour of the socialists:
Guided tour 11am by Grit Linke and Udo Mayer, Interessengemeinschaft Chemnitzer Gästeführer, meeting point: cemetery entrance Wartburgstraße.
On Open Monument Day in Chemnitz, two monument ensembles will also be open and open to visitors, which are being renovated and looked after by dedicated members of Chemnitz associations:
Open-air theatre in Küchwaldpark, Schloßchemnitz:
Guided tours: 10 am to 1 pm (hourly, as required) by the "Verein zur Förderung der Küchwaldbühne" e. V.; 3 pm theatre performance.V.; 3 pm theatre performance "Räuber Hotzenplotz" (admission required).
Signal boxes II and III, as well as parts of the cable drainage system of the former Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf marshalling yard:
Open: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. - 11.30 a.m. and 2 p.m. wagon runs, 11.30 a.m. and 2.30 p.m. guided tours by members of FÖV "Eisenbahnfreunde Richard Hartmann" e.V.
The following institutions and churches are also open on Open Monument Day:
State Museum of Archaeology in the former Schocken department stores', Stefan-Heym-Platz 1 - Guided tours: 10 am to 5 pm, every hour by museum staff.
Former Elite Diamond bicycle factory, Nevoigtstraße 4 - Guided tours: from 8 a.m. - every two hours by carpenter Sebastian Schulz; also information on the Frauenkirche Dresden, whose wooden interior was made in Chemnitz, and on carpentry and restoration work in other current listed buildings, including the Schocken department stores'.
Stadtkirche St Jakobi - guided tour with concert at 5 pm by Dr des. Stefan Thiele - linking the guided tour of the restored ambulatory choir with works by Saxon composers from the 17th and 18th centuries - under the motto "Monument to architecture and monument to the art of sound". The Convivium Musicum Chemnicense will be playing.
Schloßkirche - 14:30 to 17:30 open church.
Kirche St. Petri, Theaterplatz 1 - 14:30 to 17:30 open church.
