Online survey on Chemnitz city centre

Participation possible from now until 23 May 2021

The city of Chemnitz is launching an online survey on the retail and centre concept, in which everyone can participate up to and including 23 May 2021. The survey asks how citizens rate the situation in Chemnitz city centre. The survey is basically aimed at city centre shopping behaviour before the pandemic. Criticisms and suggestions can also be made so that the situation in the city centre can be better analysed and further developed.

The city centre is the central meeting place and exchange point for all groups, milieus and classes of the urban population. For many years, retail was one of the most important leading uses in the city centre. Even before the pandemic, the situation of city centre retail was already in a state of upheaval in many cities, including Chemnitz.

In addition to competition from neighbouring medium-sized and regional centres and shopping centres, growing online retail and, since 2020, the coronavirus pandemic have been additional drivers of structural change in recent years.

The online survey focuses on questions such as:

  • How often do you visit the city centre and how long do you spend there?
  • Which destinations do you visit in the city centre?
  • How do you rate the quality of the city centre compared to the shopping centres?
  • Has the city centre developed positively or negatively over the past ten years?
  • Which means of transport do you use to visit the city centre?
  • What impact has the coronavirus pandemic had on visits to the city centre?

The answers will be incorporated into the analysis of the current situation, which is being carried out for the current update of the city's retail and centre concept.

The findings will also serve as a basis for planning the further development of the city centre as an urban centre of activity with an attractive mix of uses and high visitor frequency.

Citizens from the surrounding area of Chemnitz are of course also welcome to take part in the survey.
