Preparing for the centenary
The summer semester at Chemnitz Adult Education Centre starts on 4 March 2019 and the course programme will be online from 10 December. All courses can be booked from this date at www.vhs-chemnitz.dehttp://www.vhs-chemnitz.deand at the service counter in the Adult Education Centre. The course catalogue will be available to take away at all known locations from 28 January 2019.
Preparations are currently underway for the adult education centre's centenary next year. Throughout social upheavals in its history, with all the associated challenges and differentiated requirements, the municipal institution has developed into an excellent institution of further education.
"The adult education centre stands for lifelong learning today, just as it did a hundred years ago. In terms of content and methodology, it must always be aligned with social requirements and the latest scientific standards," explains the director Grit Bochmann.
A series of special events are planned to mark the anniversary, linking the past, present and future. "We are also planning a vision series with lectures that focus on our common future in Chemnitz, Germany and the world," summarises Grit Bochmann. Detailed information will be published separately in January.
In addition to the classic adult education topics and everyday educational offers, the course programme has been adapted to meet recognisable needs. Following on from the high demand for smartphone and tablet courses in recent semesters - the number of courses tripled - workshops on navigation, route planning, photography with smartphones and security will be held for the first time in the 2019 summer semester. The older generation in particular showed great interest here.
Consumer rights when travelling at home and abroad are addressed shortly before the spring travel season. Train delays, lost luggage or cancelled flights - this course provides information about your rights as a passenger.
To maximise the educational and recreational benefits of a trip abroad, the Adult Education Centre offers 13 compact courses in the "Foreign Languages for Travellers" format. Important basics are taught in just a few teaching units. New courses include Turkish, Thai, Czech, Polish and Chinese.
The Chemnitz city walks will explore the neighbourhoods of Schloßchemnitz, Markersdorf and Altendorf, among others. The adult education centre invites you to various educational trips beyond the city limits. In Baden-Baden, for example, the Brahmshaus, the world-famous spa architecture and the Fabergé Museum are on the programme. Weimar is also a destination. To mark the centenary of the Bauhaus, the Weimar Bauhaus University, the Bauhaus Museum and the Haus am Horn will be visited. In the current semester, all educational trips are very well booked.
The Chemnitz Adult Education Centre is located in the heart of the city of Chemnitz, right next to the central bus stop at Moritzstraße 20. The Adult Education Centre is the largest municipal education provider in the TIETZ building (Department of Cultural Affairs, Office 41 of the City of Chemnitz) and occupies the fourth and fifth floors with a total of 33 mostly multifunctional, state-of-the-art course rooms. The Chemnitz Adult Education Centre employs 16 staff and over 350 teachers from more than 30 countries. More than 15,500 learners from 68 countries took part in around 35,000 lessons (total annual figures for 2017). This means that the adult education centre is roughly the size of a three-form grammar school.
