Ongoing construction work at schools during the holiday period
Chemnitz City Council is using the summer holidays to carry out major construction work at Chemnitz schools.
Fire protection measures are being optimised at the Lower and Upper Luisen Schools (secondary and primary schools) and a second escape route is being built via escape stair towers. The project, which will cost around 780,000 euros in total, will be completed by the end of the holidays.
At Rabenstein primary school, final work such as furniture assembly and relocation is underway following the structural acceptance. The general refurbishment of the school building, the sports hall and the outdoor facilities will cost a total of around 6 million euros. The school will go into operation at the start of the new school year.
For the complete renovation of the boarding school at the sports high school, gutting and demolition work is currently being carried out, the foundations for the new extension are being completed and the old façade is being removed. During the holidays, work will begin on the scaffolding, roof sealing and lift construction. The comprehensive project, totalling €7.1 million, will be completed in December 2017.
Demolition work has begun at Borna primary school, the former school for the physically disabled. The complex refurbishment, totalling around 8.5 million euros, will be completed in February 2018.
The Josephinen secondary school, located at Agnesstraße 11, is being refurbished to increase capacity. The measures for this have been underway since March 2016 and the scaffolding, roof and façade renovation will begin during the holidays. The entire project, with total costs of around 4.4 million euros, will be completed in March 2017.
Construction work totalling EUR 2.5 million is underway at the evening secondary school/ grammar school and the former speech therapy school (Arno-Schreiter-Str. 1 and 3). While the metal façades on the stairwells of the evening secondary school/gymnasium building can be installed and the roof and façade work completed during the summer holidays, the district heating lines to the evening school and the sports halls at the former speech therapy school are being renewed as preparatory measures. The work on the evening secondary school/gymnasium will be completed in September 2016. Construction work on the former speech therapy school and future secondary school will begin in October 2016 and last twelve months.
The R. Hartmann School Technical Vocational Training Centre III will also undergo extensive refurbishment. Work began in October 2015 and will be completed in November 2016. The project, which will cost a total of 4 million euros, also includes the refurbishment of the outdoor facilities.
The Rosa Luxemburg primary school is also being completely refurbished. During the holidays, the façade renovation, carpentry work, interior work and the heating and ELT installation will be carried out. The project, which has a total cost of around 2.2 million euros, began in November 2015 and will end in October 2016.
The primary schools in Mittelbach and Kleinolbersdorf will each receive a second escape route and further fire protection measures. The work for Mittelbach primary school will last until August 2017 at a cost of around 800,000 euros, while the estimate for Kleinolbersdorf primary school is around 360,000 euros; the work will be completed in August 2016.
Unscheduled work to renovate the ceiling at the J-Heinrich-Pestalozzi learning support centre will also begin in August 2016. The measure, with total costs of 890,000 euros, will end in July 2017.
Measures that continue beyond the summer holidays will be carried out logistically in such a way that they do not interfere with teaching activities as far as possible. Noise-intensive work will be carried out outside lesson times.
