"Chemnitz is a city that has constantly renewed itself, especially through knowledge and young people." With this statement by Prof Arnold van Zyl, Rector of Chemnitz University of Technology, the communication campaign "The city is me" was launched exactly one year ago today. The words of the university rector were unfurled on an oversized banner at the Roter Turm gallery and aroused the curiosity of Chemnitz residents about the campaign.
Some felt directly challenged and made their own personal commitment. To date, around 300 have been added in words, pictures or videos. With honestly direct, creative, but also critical and very affectionate statements, people describe their relationship to their city.
The people of Chemnitz are at the centre of the communication concept. They describe their attitude to life, acknowledge the good aspects of their city and thus become ambassadors for a strong Chemnitz worth living in. After all, success stories can also be written here. This is confirmed by the interviews in the "Makers of the week" section. 43 personalities from the worlds of culture, business and sport who have been particularly successful with their project, idea or work in Chemnitz and are committed to the city have been presented to date.
The centrepiece of the campaign is the homepage www.die-stadt-bin-ich.de, which features articles about the "Maker of the Week", confessions, a photo blog, editorial articles, event information such as Rock am Kopp and information on further steps for the city of Chemnitz's new marketing and communication concept. The website has recorded around 314,000 clicks to date. The Facebook page www.facebook.com/diestadtbinich is also part of the online dialogue platform with almost 2,400 likes.
"Rock am Kopp" was a complete success in the summer. Around 5,000 mostly young people attended MC Fitti's performance. In total, around 10,000 people saw the concerts by the Berlin rapper, the German-British band I Heart Sharks and the Werdau band Still Trees at the second Rock am Kopp and Leipzig's Ronny Trettmann at the third. This makes the events at the Karl-Marx-Kopf one of the large and small campaigns aimed at sharpening people's awareness of their city and promoting Chemnitz nationally.
The ambassador test, which has been available on the homepage since May, has also met with a great response. Questions such as "Where did Chemnitz get its name?" or "Which of the following useful everyday objects was invented in Chemnitz?" have been answered by 1,700 participants so far. Those who have answered three quarters of the 23 questions correctly can call themselves official Bots©hafter. One in two passed the test at the first attempt. The reward: a small ambassador parcel with insignia, which was sent to 234 participants.
Just in time for the winter holidays, the inscription "Chemnitz to go" lit up on smartphones. The new app provides information, interesting facts and entertaining anecdotes about the sights on audio tours through the city or in the comfort of your own home. It is aimed at Chemnitz residents, tourists and visitors to the city alike and invites you to discover the city in sound and vision. So far, it has been downloaded a total of 1,777 times free of charge.
The campaign has received support not only from citizens but also from the business community. Sparkasse Chemnitz has supported the entire campaign. The various projects such as "Rock am Kopp" were supported by AOK Plus, enviaM, Autohaus Schloz und Wöllenstein, Grundstücks- und Gebäudewirtschafts-Gesellschaft mbH, Volksbank Chemnitz eG and Getränke Pfeifer und Eins, among others.
