"One Billion Rising" is a worldwide campaign by women, to which people around the world gather every year on 14 February to dance together and set an example for an end to violence against girls and women.
The city's Equal Opportunities Officer and the network of Chemnitz women's initiatives are calling on women and men to dance along on Tuesday, 14 February 2018 at 4 p.m. on Neumarkt in Chemnitz . The drumming group "Sawa Sawa" will set the mood with their rousing rhythms. They will be dancing to the song "Break the Chain". The choreography can already be practised on Thursday, 8 February 2018 at 8 p.m. in the Mehrgenerationenhaus, Irkutsker
Str. 15 can be practised.
Representatives of the media are cordially invited to attend.
Background
The One Billion Rising campaign was triggered by the shocking statements made by Republican US MP and anti-abortion activist Todd Akin in August 2012.
He had claimed that even pregnancies resulting from rape should not be terminated and spoke of "legitimate rape" in an interview. The artist Eve Ensler then wrote an open letter to the Republican in which she publicly expressed her disgust and dismay at such statements and pointed out that he had given millions of women worldwide reasons to rise up.
