"One Billion Rising" is a worldwide campaign by women, to which people around the world gather every year on 14 February to dance together and set an example for an end to violence against girls and women.

The city's Equal Opportunities Officer and the network of Chemnitz women's initiatives are calling on women and men to dance along on Tuesday, 14 February 2017, 3.30 pm, at Neumarkt in Chemnitz . The choreography by Debbie Allen to "Break the Chain" and the German version "Sprengt die Ketten" will be danced.

Representatives of the media are cordially invited to attend.

Background
The One Billion Rising campaign was triggered by the shocking statements made by Republican US MP and anti-abortion activist Todd Akin in August 2012, who claimed that even pregnancies resulting from rape should not be terminated and spoke of "legitimate rape" in an interview. The artist Eve Ensler then wrote an open letter to the Republican, publicly expressing her disgust and dismay at such statements and pointing out that he had given millions of women around the world reasons to rise up.

In Chemnitz, this campaign also marks the start of the "Chemnitz Women's Weeks" around International Women's Day, which will run until Equal Pay Day on 18 March. A total of 14 different events, forums and lectures will address and discuss issues specific to women.
