On the trail of the city's history: Chemnitz and Saxony at the beginning of the Weimar Republic

The adult education centre invites you to an online lecture on the history of the city of Chemnitz at the end of the First World War and the transition from monarchy to republic on Monday, 2 November at 6 pm. The historian Prof Dr Mike Schmeitzner's search for clues is entitled "Revolution and Republic. Chemnitz and Saxony at the beginning of the Weimar Republic". The event is free of charge. Prof Schmeitzner works at the Hannah Arendt Institute in Dresden and is an expert on the history of Saxony in the 20th century.
The event marks the start of the new series "Places of historical remembrance in Chemnitz".
The lecture, originally planned as an on-site event, will take place online. Until
2 November, 3 pm, registration is possible at www.vhs-chemnitz.de or 0371 488-4343. Participants will then receive an access link by email.
The lecture and subsequent discussion will focus on the causes and course of the political upheavals of 1918/19 in Saxony and Chemnitz as well as the founding of the Free State. Who were the various protagonists of the revolution and what were their programmes? What were the new workers' and soldiers' councils all about? What was their relationship to parliamentarianism? What role did Chemnitz play in comparison to other Saxon cities? And finally: What were the preliminary burdens with which this first Saxon Free State and the German Republic started in terms of domestic and foreign policy? Was this democracy doomed to fail from the outset?
