On Sunday 6 September, from 2 pm to 8 pm, the Stadtwirtschaft community invites anyone interested to the second courtyard festival, entitled ‘Vom Wimmeln und Wuseln’ – a jointly organised event.
Following the completion of construction work on the Chemnitz 2025 intervention site and the arrival of many new tenants, this year’s festival promises to be even more diverse than last year’s inaugural event.
Among others, the line-up includes “CLARO!”, the Co-ordination Centre for STEM Programmes in South-West Saxony, the ‘Braubox Chemnitz’ hobby brewery, the Fauch Schoki chocolate manufactory and the Chemnitz Art Factory among the new permanent tenants of Stadtwirtschaft who will be showcasing their work at the courtyard festival.
In addition, visitors to the courtyard festival can also get hands-on with other organisations already familiar from last year: the writing and printing workshop run by ERIKA e.V., for example, invites visitors to bring their own items of clothing and decorate them using linocut printing. At the Gründungsgarage Chemnitz, visitors can, amongst other things, find out how large their owncarbon footprint is. Restorer and artist Ingo Scheller has a wheel of fortune ready to give away selected vintage items to the public. The Zeux materials initiative invites you to present your own recycling and upcycling projects and seek support from the materials and craft professionals. Art educator Marina Klavina will be celebrating the conclusion of her exhibition ‘Heimat gestalten’ with visitors to the courtyard festival. At the Stadtfabrikanten’s FabLab, you can explore the hands-on workshops to your heart’s content and strike up a conversation with makers. The Chemnitz Museum of Natural History is also opening its fossil workshop and inviting visitors to explore.
In addition, a stage programme adds to the appeal of the courtyard festival, featuring, amongst other things, a Stadtwirtschaft auction where finds from the archives of Stadtwirtschaft and its key figures will go under the hammer. Big Buddha brings musical energy to the stage with live rap – the artist has also been a member of the Stadtwirtschaft community for several months now. Freuth will provide another musical highlight: this EDM project already proved at the first Hoffest in 2025 that it can get the Stadtwirtschaft buzzing and visitors dancing. Further musical acts are planned.
At 3 pm and 4 pm, two guided tours of the Stadtwirtschaft site, each lasting around 45 minutes, will also be offered: the focus will be on the changes that have taken place in recent years and, in particular, on the projects under the ‘National Urban Development Projects’ funding programme.
The federal programme has specifically supported projects aimed at personalising the Kreativhof and fostering community building. As a result, several sub-projects have been realised in recent years with the help of numerous stakeholders from the Stadtwirtschaft, from Chemnitz and beyond. Created specifically for the Stadtwirtschaft, for example, were the prototype and a small batch of so-called ‘Fleximöbel’ – a set of outdoor furniture that can be used flexibly for events. These were designed by Leopold Rubahn, a graduate of the Faculty of Applied Arts in Schneeberg at the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau, and manufactured by Holzkombinat Chemnitz and Stadtfabrikanten Chemnitz.
In addition, as part of another sub-project, several façades of the Stadtwirtschaft were designed by established street artists and up-and-coming artists. Together, the Zeux Materials Initiative, FabLab Chemnitz and the artists Ingo Scheller and Marina Klavina also designed and built a large book-shaped cupboard – the Stadtwirtschaft’s ‘Bücherpforte’.
In collaboration between the Stadtwirtschaft team and the agency Haus E, a wayfinding system was created to guide visitors through the site from the entrances to their desired destination – featuring, amongst other things, four 2.70-metre-tall Stadtwirtschaft sculptures.
Last but not least, the design of the site incorporated numerous ideas that had previously been developed in community workshops, including covered outdoor workspaces, rainwater collection points and an urban gardening area, facilities for physical activity such as a mini bouldering wall, a basketball hoop and calisthenics equipment, as well as quiet zones and seating areas.
Four goblins also tell the story of the changes in the city’s economy. Reportedly resident on the site for decades, they were brought to light this summer thanks to a 10,000-euro EUJA! grant from the City of Chemnitz, as well as further funding from the City of Chemnitz and the federal programme ‘National Urban Development Projects’. Since then, they have been supporting the Stadtwirtschaft team, recounting the history of the site and posing for photo shoots.
