Activities around the European Mobility Week from 16 to 22 September in Chemnitz
The kick-off event is the Mobility Day on 16 September from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Neumarkt with a bicycle auction, fun and games and numerous information stands. In addition to the CFC youth team, which invites you to a training session, children and young people can gain their first experience of playing wheelchair basketball with the Niners and get technical tips from professionals. Children can take a look into the future with the help of the Chair of Labour Science and Innovation Management at Chemnitz University of Technology. An age simulation suit is used to visualise and experience mobility restrictions in old age. The CVAG and VMS Infomobiles will be on hand to provide information, and activity stands will provide information about electromobility. The traditional auction of bicycles from the lost property office will take place at 3 pm.
"Mobility with understanding - economy with profit" is the motto of this year's European Mobility Week and also the topic of a panel discussion on 20 September 2016 at 7 p.m. in the Neue Sächsische Galerie. Junior Professor of Human Geography Dr Birgit Glorius from Chemnitz University of Technology, Stefan Tschök, Press Spokesman for CVAG Chemnitz, and the Deputy Managing Director and Head of the Transport, Energy and Communication Department at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Dietmar Richter, will discuss the extent to which economic efficiency, accessibility and sustainability are possible in a changing society.
Every year, during the week from 16 to 22 September, the European Commission calls on cities and municipalities to explore alternative and innovative ways of getting around. In this way, municipalities and their citizens show that sustainable mobility is possible, fun and can be lived in practice. The city of Chemnitz has been taking part since 2002 as one of around 2000 cities throughout Europe.
For the first time, a "Safe Routes to School" campaign is being organised in Chemnitz to mark European Mobility Week. For this purpose, the access roads at Röhrsdorf primary school will be open to bicycles only from 6.45 am. The girls and boys have the opportunity to use the areas in front of their school creatively and transform them into small works of art using chalk. In addition, the children will be sensitised to the topic of mobility through hands-on activities at various stands. The campaign arose from the results of the survey on the way to school carried out by the school route safety working group. On this day, parents are encouraged to bring their children to school on foot or by bike rather than by car in order to teach children how to deal responsibly with road traffic.
In addition to the Mobility Day, the city's schools and nurseries can choose from a varied programme on the subject of mobility from 16 to 22 September. With the help of local partners such as CVAG, the Saxon Industrial Museum Chemnitz and the CWE tourist information centre, children and young people will be offered discovery tours, company tours and craft activities to explore their city in a mobile and creative way.
Citizens can take part in themed and barrier-free city tours and tours of the surrounding area on foot or by bike.
