Offspring of the West Caucasian ibex
Tierpark Chemnitz: Holiday offers in the zoo and wildlife park
In mid-May and early June, two young animals were born to the West Caucasian ibex at Chemnitz Zoo - a buck and a doe. The group now consists of ten animals.
The ibex mating season falls in the winter months of November and December. After a gestation period of just under six months, a single young is usually born in May and June. Twin births are rather rare here.
The Western Caucasian ibex has the smallest distribution area of all wild ibex species. This covers an area of around 15,000 square metres in the western Caucasus, which mainly extends over the countries of Georgia and Russia. This makes the distribution area smaller than the federal state of Saxony (18,000 square metres).
With this small distribution area in the western Caucasus and a rapidly declining population of only around 5000 individuals, the Western Caucasian ibex is considered a critically endangered species. Despite a conservation breeding programme, these imposing horned animals are rarely exhibited in European zoos. In Germany, this species can only be found in four other zoological institutions. Chemnitz Zoo is therefore all the more pleased to be able to announce that it has once again successfully participated in a conservation breeding programme.
Holiday offers at the zoo and wildlife park
A visit to Chemnitz Zoo is always worthwhile during the summer holidays. The park shines in lush green and there are also one or two young animals to discover in the enclosures. There will also be exciting holiday activities at Chemnitz Zoo and the Oberrabenstein Wildlife Park.
From Monday, 24 June, daily at 11 a.m. , Chemnitz Zoo will once again be organising exciting short tours for young and old - starting with the pink flamingos.
On Tuesday, 25 June, the pygmy hippos are on the programme.

The popular show feedings at the Oberrabenstein Wildlife Park also take place again on weekdays at 11 a.m. , with the wolves on Mondays and Saturdays, the mouflons on Tuesdays and Fridays, the bison on Wednesdays and the wildcats on Thursdays and Sundays.
