Offspring at Chemnitz Zoo
Leaping tamarin couple have their first young
Just in time for the zoo festival with the theme "The monkey is laughing at me", the jumping tamarins have had offspring since the end of May. Jumping tamarins belong to the marmoset family. This is the first offspring of the breeding pair, which was newly formed at the end of last year. The female came from Halle Zoo and the experienced male from Neuwied Zoo.
The cub is carried and well cared for by both parents. You have to look carefully if you want to spot the little head in the black fur of the parent animal.
Jumping tamarins are found in the Amazon basin. They live in the rainforest in small family groups. The animals maintain contact with each other through a diverse repertoire of sounds, some of which even reach into the ultrasonic range. Their diet consists mainly of fruit, insects and small vertebrates. The gestation period is around 155 days. The species is endangered.
In addition to the new zoo resident, there will be other activities at the zoo festival on Saturday and Sunday, 11/12 June, from 10 am to 6 pm, such as monkey activity stands for the little ones with the spider monkey pass, bouncy castle, archery, tree climbing with monkey grips, craft stands, face painting, pony rides and a push-up challenge.
