Offspring among the meerkats

Names found for Capybara ladies I Guided tour of the game reserve

Good news from Chemnitz Zoo: the meerkat group, which has been living together at the zoo since May, has had its first offspring. The cub, born in mid-September, is already exploring the grounds - always under the watchful eyes of the family members. Visitors therefore have the opportunity to observe the cute young animal.

Outside the enclosure, meerkat pups are usually always accompanied by a "babysitter". At the zoo, this is currently mainly done by the father and uncle. After such excursions, the young animal also retreats to one of the burrows for a break, where it is still suckled by its mother.

Capybara ladies have been given names

"Pippi" and "Lotta" have won the race. In a vote on the zoo's Facebook page, people had the opportunity to decide on the names of the two young "ladies of the grasses" - as Capybara translates as. The result was quite clear. The capybaras can currently still be seen in the zoo's South America enclosure before they move to their winter quarters in the tropical house as the temperatures get colder. At the moment, the male "Fred" can still be seen courting the two females.

Guided tour through the Oberrabenstein wildlife enclosure at the end of the day

What do the animals actually do when the staff have already gone home for the day? Who goes to sleep and who only really wakes up in the evening? And how does the fallow deer rut? These and other questions will be explored during an evening tour of the Oberrabenstein game reserve on Thursday, 24 October 2019. The tour starts at 4.30 pm and lasts approx. 90 minutes. Please call (0371) 85 07 08 to book in advance. Participation in the tour costs 10 euros per person (including admission) and the number of participants is limited. The tour is suitable for children aged 10 and over. The ticket office at the main entrance will be manned until 4.30 pm. Participants should wear clothing suitable for the weather and bring torches if possible.
