Offspring among the emus at Chemnitz Zoo
The emus at the zoo have produced offspring. Unlike other bird species, in emus it is not the female or both partners that breed, but the cock alone. He sat patiently on the nest for around two months without being disturbed. The cock is also solely responsible for guiding and guarding the offspring. The bond between father and young is very close for around six months.
Emus are flightless ratites and the largest bird species in Australia. They are found across almost the entire continent and can weigh up to 55 kg and grow to a height of 1.90 metres.
Emus have been kept in Chemnitz since 2003. The cock comes from a Danish zoo and came to us from Leipzig Zoo in 2006, the hen from Neuwied Zoo in 2013.
