Official household survey - microcensus 2023 underway
The Municipal Statistics Office of the City of Chemnitz would like to point out that the microcensus, also known as the "small census", has begun and that selected households will once again be surveyed. This official household survey is conducted annually. In contrast, the comprehensive population census, such as the 2022 census last year, only takes place every ten years.
The microcensus is a sample survey in which one per cent of the Saxon population (20,000 households) will be surveyed between January and December 2023 on topics relating to household structure, employment, job search, school or university attendance and sources of livelihood. This year, the focus will also be on aspects of the EU labour force sample as well as questions on household health and pension insurance and internet use. The legal basis for this can be found in the Microcensus Act.
The households to be surveyed are selected according to the rules of a mathematical-statistical random procedure. There is a legal obligation to provide information for each selected household. In order to be able to make statements about changes and developments in the population, the selected households are surveyed up to four times (maximum twice within a year).
The surveys are primarily carried out by trained survey officers, either by telephone or in person on site. The survey officers appointed by the State Statistical Office notify the households in writing.
Alternatively, it is possible to complete the questionnaire online or on paper.
The survey officers legitimise themselves with a special ID card from the Statistical Office of the Free State of Saxony. They have been instructed on the laws applicable to the microcensus and the relevant data protection regulations and are obliged to maintain confidentiality.
All information collected is subject to the strictest confidentiality. The individual details obtained are used exclusively for the purposes specified by law.
The summarised statistical results from the microcensus surveys in Saxony are available to all interested parties via the publications of the State Statistical Office.
