Of sounding ore - bells and bell founders in Chemnitz

Church and art historian Dr Stefan Thiele will be speaking about bells and bell founders in Chemnitz on Wednesday, 13 April 2016 at 6 pm in the City Archive, Aue 16. Admission is free.
Since the founding of Chemnitz in the 12th century, the life of the city has been accompanied by the sound of bells. After the Benedictine monastery of St Mary's, the towers of the other churches were gradually given their bells. The most important Saxon bell founders - based in Freiberg and Dresden - played a part in the formation of Chemnitz's stock of bells from the 16th to the 19th century. It is little known that the craft of bell casting was also practised in Chemnitz for almost two centuries. In some cases, hardly any traces of this have survived, which is due in particular to the great loss of bells during the First and Second World Wars. Dr Stefan Thiele draws attention to the bells in the city's church towers and raises awareness of an almost forgotten chapter in Chemnitz's history of craftsmanship and art.
