Oberrabenstein railway viaduct is ceremonially opened
Inauguration on 14 October, 2 pm, fairground on Oberfrohnaer Straße
On Saturday, 14 October, from 2 pm, the railway viaduct in Oberrabenstein will be inaugurated following its successful renovation. Mayor Michael Stötzer and other representatives of the City of Chemnitz, the State of Saxony, which contributed funding, and the construction companies involved will hand over the monument to the people of Chemnitz at the fairground on Oberfrohnaer Straße.
All interested citizens and representatives of the media are cordially invited.

From this point onwards, the viaduct can also be used by cyclists, as the usable width has been adjusted to three metres and the height of the railings to 1.30 metres.
The railway viaduct was converted into a footpath bridge in 1984. The concrete walkway from this period has now been replaced by new precast concrete elements with a subsequently applied mastic asphalt surface. In addition, the superstructure was fitted with modern LED lighting.
The corrosion protection of the bridge's steel truss structure was also completely renewed. Some severely damaged structural components had to be replaced. As the entire structure is very small and inaccessible, this work turned out to be more complex than originally planned.
The renovation of the Oberrabenstein railway viaduct took two and a half years. The total cost of the renovation totalled around 2.5 million euros. The state of Saxony provided 1.5 million euros of this as a fixed grant from the former GDR party assets.
The building is not only important for tourism, but also has a high value as a technical monument and was therefore preserved in its original substance. To further emphasise the architectural and technical masterpiece, the building will be illuminated by four LED spotlights in the dark.
