"Not by bread alone" - extraordinary portraits in simple language
Adult education centre: Exhibition opening and book presentation on 6 February, 5 p.m., VHS gallery in the TIETZ, 5th floor
On Monday 6 February at 5 pm, the exhibition of the eponymous reading book "Nicht vom Brot allein" - now the ninth publication within a literacy project of the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre - will be opened. Texts, photos and artistic works from the book will be on display.
Interested parties are invited to the opening in the VHS gallery in the TIETZ, 5th floor, for a lively exchange, music and art as well as a small snack. The programme will feature Mathis Stendike with sounds from the hang drum and Sabine Hochmuth with a lino printing workshop. Admission is free of charge.
For the project "Not by bread alone", a total of 25 extraordinary Chemnitz residents were portrayed who are actively involved in shaping the city's society and whose stories are worth telling through their courageous actions and their commitment to respect, justice and tolerance. They were all asked the following questions: What is important to you in life? What moves you in Chemnitz? Why do you do such special things?
Their answers were written down by the learners in the literacy project. They are stories about courage and doubt, love and trust, loneliness and envy. While working on the project, the participants actively engaged with social participation, political education and commitment. The book in simple language created in the project is intended to convey this to the readers.
25 functionally illiterate people were involved in the literacy project. It was designed, managed and carried out by Anja Hüttner and Denise Wagner, developers of learning and teaching materials in adult education.
The exhibition can be seen until 31 March, Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 6 pm in the VHS gallery on the 5th floor of the TIETZ. (Admission is free of charge.)
Background to the literacy projects
Since 2009, the adult education centre has been working with the two concept developers and authors Anja Hüttner and Denise Wagner on annual adult literacy projects to produce a large number of textbooks. These have included a film documentary, guidebooks and learning boxes in easy language as well as the textbooks "Mein Nachbar in Chemnitz" (2019) and "Jüdisches Leben in Chemnitz" (2021) - each with portraits of people from different cultural backgrounds in easy language.
