The city of Chemnitz has been nominated for the title of "Energy Community of the Year 2024". From 6 to 30 January, all citizens have the opportunity to cast their vote and help shape the decision at the following link: https://www.empirio.de/s/aDLtH2DlHM.
The award from the Agentur für Erneuerbare Energien e.V. (AEE) is supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection and is intended to recognise municipalities that are particularly committed to the energy and climate transition.
The AEE has already praised Chemnitz for its comprehensive strategy for the use of renewable energies in various areas and named the city Energy Community of the Month in August 2024. To mark the 20th anniversary of this award, one of the twelve Energy Municipalities of the Month 2024 will now be recognised as the overall winner for the first time.
Pioneering projects for climate protection include the establishment of an international innovation and technology centre for hydrogen, the continuous expansion of solar energy, projects for neighbourhood development and the expansion of mobility services and, of course, the coal phase-out. Chemnitz is consistently pursuing the goal of decarbonisation and is aiming for greenhouse gas neutrality by 2040, if possible earlier.
The city's commitment to climate protection is reflected in the European Energy Award (eea), which the city of Chemnitz received in gold for the third time in 2023. In addition to various offices of the City of Chemnitz, the Chemnitz Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK), the Chemnitz Chamber of Crafts (HWK), the energy supplier Eins Energie in Sachen GmbH & Co KG (eins) and the Chemnitz Environmental Centre are part of the City of Chemnitz's eea team. The quiet but effective actions of numerous private stakeholders who are driving innovation in the field of renewable energy and efficiency should also be emphasised.
