No left turn on the Südring into Usti nad Labem street
City traffic authority implements measure to alleviate the accident blackspot Südring / Usti nad Labem street - traffic routing changes from Tuesday, 11 June
The city of Chemnitz is implementing a further measure to alleviate an accident black spot: from Tuesday, 11 June, it will no longer be possible to turn left from Südring towards Stollberger Straße into Usti nad Labem Straße. The crossing will be closed. Road users are asked to adjust to the new traffic routing and to observe it. In the interests of road safety, we ask for your attention and understanding for the permanent traffic restrictions that may be associated with the left-turn ban. The markings and signage currently still in place will be adapted accordingly. All other driving relationships on site will continue to be possible as before.
The measure is based on a decision by the City of Chemnitz Traffic Accident Commission to alleviate the current accident blackspot (see also PM 202 dated 22 April 2013). It has not only been discussed but also demanded by many citizens in recent weeks.
Background: Up to nine traffic accidents occur every year on the Südring at the junction with Usti nad Labem road. The accumulation of turning accidents and accidents involving personal injury in the last three years with eleven injuries is striking.
The evaluation by the accident commission revealed that traffic regulation measures are necessary to minimise the danger zone. In particular, the conflict between vehicles turning left from the Südring into Usti nad Labem and vehicles travelling in two lanes from the opposite direction must be eliminated.
As the proportion of left-turning vehicles here is very low at around 900 vehicles per day and alternative bypass options are available via Neefestraße / Carl-Hamel-Straße or Südring / Stollberger Straße, the prevention of left-turning implemented from 11 June 2013 is considered suitable and proportionate.
The following measures are planned for the implementation of the left-turn ban by the traffic authority in the city's civil engineering department - the work will begin on Tuesday, 11 June at approx. 9 am:
- Drawing in the left-turn lane by marking a restricted area: this will be carried out by the company Maler Süd. If it rains and the marking work cannot be carried out, the left-turn lane will be blocked off with beacons for the time being.
- For the time being, the crossing will be closed with mobile guiding elements: The guiding elements will be set up by the company Löschner und Meisel.
- Erection of traffic signs (prescribed direction of travel "straight ahead", information board on changed traffic routing): Löschner und Meisel will carry out the work.
- Adaptation of the local signposting to the Sachsenhalle: This will also be realised by Löschner und Meisel.
The total cost of the measure is approx. 6,000 euros.
