No decision yet on the Christmas market
The city of Chemnitz has not yet made a final decision on whether the Christmas market can take place this year. Mayor Miko Runkel made this clear today following a vote by the Council of Elders.
In view of the sharp rise in the number of coronavirus cases, the administration - like many other cities - is currently examining the conditions under which a Christmas market can take place. A cancellation is also on the table
"The Christmas market is one of the great traditions of our region," says Miko Runkel, "but the health of visitors has priority. Nevertheless, the city is doing everything it can to make what is responsibly feasible possible - even if the chances are not great at the moment." The prerequisite for the Christmas market to take place, regardless of the form it takes, is a fall in the number of cases.
According to Runkel, it is important that there is as uniform a line as possible on this issue in Bavaria. The city hopes that the new regulations announced by the state will bring this about. According to the mayor, it would not make sense if Chemnitz, for example, cancelled its Christmas market and everyone went to Christmas markets in the Ore Mountains or vice versa.
The city will therefore wait and see how the number of cases develops and also the regulations of the Free State, which are to be issued this week. A final decision on the Christmas market will be made as late as possible - probably next week. This will also give traders planning security.
