By the end of February, nine trees in the beech stand at Bethanien Hospital will have to be felled or removed. This work, which is being carried out by a tree care company, is without exception an urgent measure to maintain or restore road safety.
A number of old beech trees in the "Beech stand at Bethanien Hospital" natural monument in the Zeisigwald forest are showing signs of severe damage. They are suffering from the increasingly dry summers, as the beech is a tree species of the temperate, oceanic climate. It likes comparatively cool, rainy summers, mild winters and requires sufficient rainfall throughout the year.
The felling of the nine marked trees is permitted by law and has been authorised by the Lower Nature Conservation Authority. The wood remains in the forest as valuable deadwood for insects, fungi, mosses and lichens.
