The city archive provides information on the lecture evening: For over 100 years, the foundries of Gustav Krautheim (1857-1926) shaped both the industrial landscape of Chemnitz and the appearance of Chemnitz's neighbourhoods. Krautheim's importance lies in the fact that he was the first steel mould caster in Saxony to introduce the Bessemer process, with which larger quantities of steel could be cast in shorter time units. He went on to machine the parts and supplied ready-to-install construction parts. This made him one of Saxony's industrial pioneers at the end of the 19th century. The foundries he founded in Chemnitz are the forerunners of today's Siemens-Flender foundry in the Wittgensdorf district. His burial place in the municipal cemetery was already confiscated in 1948.
