Next construction phase started in the Pleißenbach neighbourhood park
New path connections created and premium cycle path continued
The first work has begun on the outdoor area, the centrepiece of the future park, in the Pleißenbach district park in Altendorf. The premium cycle path - the link between Wüstenbrand and Küchwald - is also being continued.
As part of "Stadt am Fluss", the district park at Pleißenbach is Chemnitz's largest intervention area as European Capital of Culture 2025. The site of the former Altendorf goods station is being transformed into a park landscape. Waterway construction work has been underway since the end of August.
The construction site for the open space in the third construction phase, the centre green corridor, stretches from Rudolf-Krahl-Straße to Paul-Jäkel-Straße and between Limbacher Straße and Gutsweg. In addition to the continuation of the premium cycle path, which is around one kilometre long, new park paths are being laid out to create new path connections. High-quality planting with around 100 standard trees, 4,000 shrubs, 7,500 perennials and 25,000 square metres of different seed mixtures are planned. This will create a variety of attractive places to spend time. A playground, which reflects suggestions from public participation, will also be integrated into the park.
Overall, the spirit of the place, the so-called "genius loci" of the former goods station, is to be preserved. This makes reference to the eventful history of the area, with parts of the railway tracks and the loading promenade being incorporated into the design. A large part of the successive growth of trees and shrubs forms the basis of the redesign. In conjunction with the renaturalisation of the Pleißenbach stream, an extensive landscape with a high amenity value is being created.
In the course of a Europe-wide tendering procedure, the company Techno-Farm und Service GmbH from Neukirchen/Adorf was awarded the contract with a sum of 2.78 million euros. The entire "Stadtteilpark am Pleißenbach" project is being supervised by the planning office Station C23 from Leipzig. The costs of the planning services amount to around 400,000 euros.
Funding from the Free State of Saxony and the urban development programme will be used to finance the construction project. It is planned to complete the construction work in the first half of 2025.
