News from the zoo: young animals to watch
Persian leopard offspring migrate to Sweden
The upcoming Whitsun weekend and the forecast good weather are perfect for a visit to the zoo. This is a great opportunity to get to know the youngest residents, as some young animals have seen the light of day at the zoo in the last few days. Two ibexes were born (sex still unknown), while the Somali wild asses and Mesopotamian fallow deer each gave birth to a male cub. Many birds have also hatched in the pheasantry and the tropical house, such as the honeyeaters, white-crested jays and purple tanagers.
Most of the animals born here leave the zoo at some point. This week, for example, the Persian leopard Shivaa, who was born at the zoo in 2011, travelled to Nordens Ark Zoo in Sweden, where she and a tomcat will provide offspring and thus help to preserve this highly endangered species. There are currently three Persian leopards living at Chemnitz Zoo.
Outlook: On the weekend after Whitsun, the zoo celebrates this year's zoo festival together with its visitors (14 and 15 June, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.). This time it is a very special one, as the zoo is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2014. The animal park festival is being held to mark this anniversary and under the motto "A Kingdom for Frogs & Co". For more information, see www.tierpark-chemnitz.de. Please note: Tomorrow, Friday 6 June, Chemnitz Zoo will close at 5 pm due to a charity event for chronically ill and disabled children and young people (Dreamnight at the zoo), last admission is 4 pm.
