News from the zoo: special tours during the holidays
Inventory: Increase in animals and species through vivarium and aquarium
The zoo and wildlife park are once again offering special guided tours during the winter holidays in Saxony. From 11 February to 26 February, there will be a short guided tour of a particular group of animals every day at 11 am. It starts next weekend with the camels (11 February) and the giant salamander (12 February). The following dates can be found on the zoo's website and Facebook page or can be requested at the ticket office.
Show feedings take place in the wildlife enclosure on weekdays at 11 am, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for the lynx and wolves, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the mouflons and wild boar.
Incidentally, there were around 1,300 animals living in the zoo on 31 December 2016 (excluding leaf-cutting ants), which is almost 400 more than in the previous year. This increase was mainly due to the occupation of the large aquarium in the redesigned foyer of the tropical house. Nine fish and two crab species populate the large tank. At 480 individuals, more amphibians were also kept in the vivarium than in previous years.
The increase can also be seen in the number of animal species: 204 species or subspecies were counted in the zoo (compared to 184 in the previous year): 45 mammal, 62 bird, 11 reptile, 64 amphibian, 10 fish and 10 invertebrate species.
A total of twelve animal species were lost and 27 new species were added. There was little change compared to the previous year in mammals, birds and reptiles as well as in the game reserve (16 species, 78 individuals).
