News from the zoo: offspring among the two-fingered sloths and meerkats
Unlike our native species, animals that live in regions where the conditions for rearing offspring are consistently good all year round usually do not have fixed breeding seasons. There is therefore a good chance of discovering offspring all year round in the zoo's tropical house.
A young two-fingered sloth was born at the end of August. The mother and the darker-coloured young animal like to spend time in the sleeping box, but can also be observed on an excursion through the branches. The young animal lies on its mother's belly as she hangs upside down in the branches.
Sloths are at home in the upper storeys of the tropical forests of South America. Their diet of leaves is relatively low in energy, so they have to use their body energy sparingly. They move very slowly and sleep up to 20 hours a day.
The meerkats are much more lively, scurrying through their enclosure during the day. This year, four young animals were raised here, the youngest of which was also born at the end of August.
