News from the zoo: DRK blood donation day on Sunday
Meerkat offspring show themselves to visitors
The joint blood donation campaigns organised by the German Red Cross Blood Donor Service North-East and Chemnitz Zoo have now become a fine tradition. This year's blood donation day, now in its sixth year, will take place on Sunday 21 July from 10 am to 5 pm at the zoo.
Visitors who donate blood on this day will receive the entrance fee for themselves and a child back at the zoo school after donating, as well as a snack voucher. They will also take part in the DRK Blood Donation Service North-East's summer campaign.
There is a large supporting programme for all children in the zoo, e.g. with an exciting pirate test.
Visitors to the zoo can also observe the youngest inhabitants - the meerkats gave birth in mid-June. Initially, the four young animals were hidden in caves, but now they can usually be seen quite well in the outdoor enclosure, where they are looked after by the three adults and four adolescents.
Note from the DRK: Blood donors must be at least 18 years old and in good health. The age of 65 should not be exceeded for the first donation. It is currently possible to donate blood up to the age of 71, provided you are in good health. Suitability to donate blood is checked on a daily basis during a preliminary medical examination. Healthy men may donate up to six times within a year, women up to four times within 12 months. There must be at least eight weeks between two donations. Please bring your identity card with you when donating blood!
