News from the zoo and wildlife park: Short guided tours and show feeding during the summer holidays - Malik the lion successfully completed his regular health check
During the summer holidays, Chemnitz Zoo will be offering short guided tours of certain animal species or animal groups every day at 11 a.m.: the birds will be the starting point on Monday (21 July) and the deer on Tuesday (22 July). The other events can be found on the Internet at www.tierpark-chemnitz.de as well as on site in the display case in front of the entrance to the zoo grounds on Nevoigtstraße or, of course, at the ticket office.
Show feedings are offered in the wildlife enclosure from Monday to Friday from 11 a.m., alternating between lynx and wolf (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and mouflon and wild boar (Tuesdays and Thursdays).
The feedings in the zoo with the marmosets (daily at 2 pm) and sloths (on weekends at 2 pm) are also worth a visit. Depending on the weather, you can also watch the feeding of the coatis (daily at 2.45 pm) and the porcupines (daily at 2.30 pm). The spherical armadillo is weighed on Wednesdays at 2.00 pm.
Malik the lion completed his regular health check
On Tuesday (15 July), the Angola lion Malik was put under anaesthetic. Vet Dr Peggy Riedel (pictured with Malik): "Since Malik's serious kidney disease four years ago, his health has been monitored once a year via a blood test. A normal blood count was taken and the organ values, especially the kidney values, were checked. The results we received today are all within the normal range."
Malik is currently in excellent health, eating well and behaving normally. However, a blood test can detect changes at a very early stage, which only become apparent later in the form of a deterioration in his general condition. In the event of a new infection or deterioration of the organ values, treatment can therefore be started relatively early before the animal shows clinical signs such as loss of appetite and apathy. Parallel to the routine check, the matted areas in the mane of the king of the animals and the Chemnitz zoo were also removed.
