New enclosure for Amur cats, new species Manul and three kids born
A lot has happened at Chemnitz Zoo in recent months and weeks. Just in time for the Whitsun weekend, visitors can discover lots of new things.
Amur cats move into new enclosure
The day before yesterday, the zoo's two Amur cats, a fifteen-year-old male cat and a seven-year-old female cat, were able to move into their extended and improved enclosure. This completes the second construction phase of the so-called cat ring. The costs for the remodelling amounted to around 129,000 euros. The old enclosure, which dated back to the 1980s, no longer met the minimum requirements for housing conditions. The enclosure was completed a few weeks ago, but still had to be furnished and planted.
Manul attracts visitors to the zoo
The zoo keeps several rarely seen and endangered small cat species. In addition to the Amur cats, these include the Oman cats and, more recently, the Manul. The Manul enclosure was the first section of the cat ring and its first resident, a young male cat from Moscow Zoo, moved in a few weeks ago. He is still quite shy and usually retreats to his sleeping box. When his future mate from a Scottish zoo arrives, he will certainly become more active. The Manul, also known as the Pallas's cat, is found in Central Asia, especially in Mongolia, and can be found at altitudes of up to 5000 metres. Its thick fur protects it from the cold and snow.
The third construction phase of the cat ring is expected to begin in early 2016. The two Oman cats will then have a new enclosure. The implementation planning is currently underway and will be followed by the invitation to tender.
Offspring among the dwarf goats
But the other animals are also worth a Whitsun trip to the zoo. The youngest inhabitants of the farm can also be observed - this week there were three offspring, one male and two females, among the African dwarf goats.
The zoo is open daily from 9 am to 7 pm. The last admission is at 6 pm. The game enclosure can be visited daily from 8 am to 6 pm.
