News from Chemnitz Zoo
Goat offspring, armoured head tree frog in the show tank, armadillo offspring on an exploratory tour, capybara move to the summer enclosure and second giant salamander back from Dresden
There are currently seven kids at Chemnitz Zoo waiting to be stroked and brushed in the farmyard. A pregnant mother goat has yet to give birth. This will complete the spring offspring at the petting zoo.
A new amphibian species is on display in the vivarium: the shovel-headed tree frog. This South American frog species stands out with its interestingly shaped nose tip. Apart from Chemnitz, there are only two other zoos in Europe that keep this species.
Now it is certain: the young armadillo is a female. After weeks of playing hide-and-seek in its cosy nest, it is now showing itself to visitors and exploring the indoor enclosure together with mum "Piepe" and, in sunny weather, the outdoor enclosure too.
The capybara family was also finally able to move from the tropical house to their summer residence, the South America enclosure. Together with their female offspring, they now share the enclosure with the breeding nandus and alpacas. On warm sunny days, they enjoy extensive baths in the enclosure's moat.
After almost four years on loan to Dresden Zoo, the giant salamander has now returned home. In Dresden, it should provide for offspring. However, successful mating depends on many factors and is very difficult. Chemnitz Zoo is now hoping for "giant salamander babies" in the coming years.
By the way: The giant salamander couple can be observed feeding every Sunday at 11 am.
