New town square being built on the Sonnenberg

Sonnenberg will receive a newly designed town square on Fürstenstraße/Zietenstraße in the coming year. The planning, building and environment committee has today launched the project.

The town square is being created at the intersection of Fürstenstraße and Zietenstraße. The aim of the plans, which have now been finalised, was to develop a public leisure facility with a corresponding quality of stay. In addition to green spaces and play areas, car parking spaces were also to be provided for the residents of the square. The project was coordinated with the local stakeholders, i.e. landlords, the savings bank and residents.

A stone forecourt will be created directly at the junction. The "Haarwäsche" fountain will be reinstalled here, and benches and bicycle stands are also planned. A four-row row of trees will be planted next to it. Underneath, comfortable benches will invite people to linger. There will also be play equipment such as swings, springy play points, balancing beams and a boules area. The existing lawn area will be landscaped with a raised bed of shrubs and perennials at the transition to the residential area.

The realisation is largely planned by the end of 2017. The costs amount to 425,000 euros. Of this, around 142,000 euros will come from the City of Chemnitz's own funds, with a further 283,000 euros coming from the Urban Redevelopment East programme.
