New technical town hall invites you to an open day

Now that the move has been completed, the new Technical Town Hall, Friedensplatz 1, will open its doors on Saturday 21 April from 10 am to 4 pm. There will be numerous activities for guests and visitors, providing an insight into the work of the various offices and departments.

The programme:

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., various offers, information stands and hands-on activities will be available free of charge on all five floors of the new Technical Town Hall building. Access is via the main entrance at Bahnhofstraße 25.

The city as an employer: Whether animal keeper, gardener or administrative assistant: the city administration offers a broad portfolio of training occupations. Information stands and discussions with trainees on site can help those who are undecided about their career choice. Anyone who has already completed an apprenticeship and is looking for a suitable job or career opportunity will also receive comprehensive information on this.

Monument protection: Architectural monuments and historic urban spaces are of interest to the general public, not just architects and monument conservators. One of the authority's tasks is to advise clients on monument protection and to supervise building projects on cultural monuments and objects in monument ensembles. A small presentation of historical artefacts - including door fittings, tiles, roof tiles and wallpaper - demonstrates the architecture of past centuries. The conservationists also show photos and architectural drawings of historical buildings in Chemnitz. In addition, display boards document the restoration of architectural and industrial monuments in the city. In addition, historical colour studies can be traced on the basis of documents. Print shop/mail room: On the open day, groups of visitors can gain an insight into the city administration's mail room and in-house print shop. The print shop produces posters and flyers, for example, as well as large-format maps for the city. A press photographer takes pictures of what is happening at lofty heights on the forecourt of the Technical Town Hall. The image is used to create a postcard in the print shop, which every visitor can take away as a souvenir of the open day.

Fire brigade: If the heart goes into a life-threatening arrhythmia, a defibrillator is used to restore the normal heart rhythm by means of electric shocks. The use of defibrillators used to be reserved for doctors and paramedics until automated external defibrillators were developed. The medical device can also be operated by laypeople and thus save lives. During the open day, members of the Chemnitz professional fire brigade will explain how to use it. Visitors can refresh their knowledge from the first aid course and simulate cardiopulmonary resuscitation on a training dummy under the guidance of the fire brigade.

Art and culture: Michael Morgner's steel sculpture "Reliquie Mensch" can be found on the forecourt of the new Technical City Hall, as well as the sculpture "Doppelbogen variabel" by Wolfram Schneider. There are also pictures and other creative works in the offices and corridors. Mathias Lindner, Director of the Neue Sächsische Galerie, will provide visitors with insightful information about the art in the new town hall.

Chemnitz wants to be European Capital of Culture 2025. But what does that actually mean? What can the people of Chemnitz do to make our city a top European destination in 2025? And how far along are the plans for the bid? These and other questions will be answered by the Capital of Culture Office team together with the Friends of the Bid in informal discussion rounds.

Environmental protection: At the open day, bird houses are on display that can be built under supervision at the nature conservation centre in Adelsberg. The Environment Agency will also be providing nature conservation information to take away and will also be providing information on renewable energies. Visitors can enjoy sausages cooked in a solar cooker. The Environment Agency will also be on hand to answer questions about the city's solar cadastre and flood protection.

Schools: The School and Sports Office can help you find the safest way to school. It also provides information on school enrolment formalities. You can also test how an interactive blackboard works. Flyers and brochures provide information on school transport and career guidance. The newly renovated sports boarding school will also be presented, with photos and floor plans providing information about the structural changes.

Sports facilities: The planned construction of a new swimming complex in Bernsdorf is attracting public attention. The architectural model of the winner of a realisation competition is visualised and presented in planning overviews. Visitors can find out more about the city's plans to renovate the Sportforum. Reconstruction of the small gymnasium is due to begin here in the summer. The plans for the renovation and utilisation of the marathon tower will be explained in words and pictures. You can also find out about courses in the municipal swimming pool, including baby swimming and aqua fitness.

Urban greenery: Under the banner of "Spring Awakening in City Greenery - Chemnitz is in Bloom", Chief Forester Andreas Streich and landscape architects will be providing information about the city's greenery. There will not only be presentations, but also illustrative objects showing what planting can be seen in Chemnitz's public squares this year. There will also be information about citizen care, tree donations, the city forest and the playground sponsors.

Urban planning: From the Contiloch to the new Technical Town Hall - this eventful history is illustrated by both a timeline and various exhibition panels. All of this can be traced in the connecting bridge on the first floor of the new Technical Town Hall. At the main entrance to the new Technical City Hall, a model of the city shows the development structure of the city centre. What the future of Chemnitz could look like is visualised in an hourly Power Point presentation in room B 513.

Traffic: If you want to know how traffic or traffic lights are controlled on the streets of Chemnitz, the opening of the traffic control centre is the right place for you. The traffic planning department uses video sequences to simulate how traffic flows are forecast. The traffic network model is presented and all kinds of questions about the traffic management system are answered.

Surveying office: In the area of the main entrance, surveying equipment such as the tachymeter or the levelling device for measuring height differences are explained. Boundary stones used in the past are now a rarity - whether historical or contemporary, the surveying office presents treasures from its collection of boundary markers. Visitors can also view topographical maps and aerial photographs from different eras of the city and compare them directly by superimposing them on one another.
