New stormwater overflow basin on Matthesstrasse will be connected to the sewer and Pleißenbach
ESC construction project requires full closure of Matthesstraße in the area between Leipziger Straße / Bergstraße from 18 March - diversions signposted
A new stormwater overflow basin has been under construction by the waste management company of the city of Chemnitz (ESC) since August 2012 in the area of Leipziger Straße / Matthesstraße outside the public traffic area. The company Krause & Co. Hoch-, Tief- und Anlagenbau GmbH was commissioned with the extensive ESC construction project. The project is to be realised by the end of September 2013 and the new stormwater overflow basin will be located on a meadow in the Konkordiapark area on Matthesstraße between Leipziger Straße and Konkordiastraße.
The waste disposal company is investing around 1.7 million euros.
As already announced in the construction site information from the City of Chemnitz on 13 March 2013, the outlet of the rainwater overflow basin in the Matthesstraße area will be connected to the sewer and Pleißenbach stream in the period from 18 March to 16 June 2013 as part of the construction work - the Pleißenbach stream runs completely under Matthesstraße.
Due to the dimensions of the drain and the structural condition of the Pleißenbach bridge in the construction area, it is not possible to integrate it into the existing arch. For this reason, part of the old structure will be demolished and replaced and a transitional structure created to integrate the stormwater overflow basin. Prior to the work, media (Elt, Primacom, gas) must be relocated to clear the construction site. Finally, the entire width of the road will be resurfaced.
The connection of the existing Leipziger Straße sewer to the new stormwater overflow basin is planned for the second to third quarter of 2013; the construction period will last around six weeks and will be realised in sections. A separate, detailed press release will be issued shortly for this construction phase in Leipziger Straße with details of the necessary traffic restrictions and diversions.
Information from the traffic authority: Before the start of the extensive construction work, the ESC and the city's civil engineering department analysed various technical connection options to avoid the full closure. However, due to the scope of the work to be realised, a full closure of Matthesstraße in the area between Leipziger Straße and Bergstraße is unavoidable. The diversion out of the city will be via Hartmannstraße / Leipziger Straße and into the city via Leipziger Straße / Salzstraße / Bergstraße. Road users are asked for their understanding and please bear in mind that there may be traffic jams in the Hartmannstraße / Leipziger Straße / Salzstraße area at peak times due to the full closure.
