New stele provides an overview of Chemnitz's twin cities
Inauguration on 24 April, 1 pm, Neumarkt
On Sunday 24 April at 1 p.m., a new stele will be unveiled on Neumarkt square, providing information about Chemnitz's twin cities. To mark "World Twin Cities Day", Chemnitz is thus demonstrating its solidarity with cities all over the world.
Representatives of the media are invited to the inauguration of the information stele by Lord Mayor Sven Schulze. The meeting point is on the Neumarkt at the passageway to the Jakobikirche.
The programme will be performed by the Unity Choir. Partnership organisations and the Chemnitz Tour Guide Association will also have their say. From 2 p.m., city guide Grit Linke will offer a themed tour of the twin city of Düsseldorf. The meeting point is the "Allee des Lichts" at the lantern of the city of Düsseldorf (in the park of the OdF, near the industrial school). Participation in the two-hour tour costs 8 euros.
Chemnitz maintains international links with eleven twin cities around the world. The longest partnership is with Tampere. The first twinning agreement was concluded with the Finnish city in 1961. The most recent partnership was agreed in 1999 with the Chinese city of Taiyuan, which is also the most distant twin city at 7,439 kilometres as the crow flies. Other twin cities are Akron (USA), Düsseldorf (Germany), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Lódz (Poland), Manchester (United Kingdom), Mulhouse (France), Timbuktu (Mali), Ústí nad Labem (Czech Republic) and Volgograd (Russia).
