New speed measurement system to be built in Harthau
Civil engineering work for the new speed measurement system, which is expected to go into operation in mid-October, is currently being carried out on Annaberger Straße at the junction with the old Harthau railway station. The device is intended to detect speeding by vehicles travelling towards the city. Towards the countryside, on the other hand, the public order office uses mobile measuring devices at irregular intervals.
Until it is calibrated, the new system will run on a trial basis without speeding. As soon as the calibration office has confirmed that it is working properly, the measured values will be actively taken over.
The new model, which is identical to the one on Stollberger Strasse, costs around 70,000 euros. In the first twelve months after its commissioning, it is expected to generate around 200,000 euros in fines.
Background: In 2012, as part of the budget consolidation programme (EKKO II), the city council commissioned the administration to install another stationary speed measurement system. The council stipulated that these should be installed near schools or daycare centres. With this in mind, the school route safety working group looked at various school routes and at the same time examined the technical feasibility of potential locations.
The traffic experts decided to install the new speed camera near the route to Harthau primary school: In order to get from the school building at Stöckelstraße 4 to their PE lessons, the pupils have to walk along Annaberger Straße to a pedestrian traffic light, cross the busy Annaberger Straße and then continue to the gymnasium at Annaberger Straße 497.
