New speed measurement system on Stollberger Straße
A new speed measurement system from the city of Chemnitz is being put into operation on Stollberger Straße (B 169). The system will be set up and installed on the carriageway heading towards the city, after the junction with Neukirchner Straße.
The choice of this new and ninth location for a speed measurement system in Chemnitz is also in response to complaints from local residents to the city's public order office about the speed limit often exceeded by local drivers. This is also demonstrated by the measurements carried out by the regulatory authority in the first half of 2012 over a longer period of time without images, i.e. a traffic counter: these measurements showed that the maximum permitted speed of 50 km/h was significantly exceeded by more than 18% of drivers with their vehicles. For example, 1,500 vehicles were measured in five days at speeds of between 60 and 75 km/h and twelve offenders were even measured at speeds of up to 105 km/h. The results of the measurements and the complaints from the public were decisive in the decision on the new location.
The costs for this new system on Stollberger Straße totalled around 47,000 euros. Components from the measuring pillar on Neefestraße, Carl-Hamel-Straße junction, which was dismantled in September 2012, were used for the new system.
Automatic measurement series without image documentation will be created until the official commissioning, which is expected to take place before the public holiday of the Day of Prayer and Repentance following the installation of the measuring pillar, the installation of the technology and the calibration of the system. The first statistics from the new system are expected to be available from 28 November 2012.
There are currently eight stationary speed measurement systems in Chemnitz: one each on Neefestraße, Leipziger Straße, Frankenberger Straße and Stollberger Straße (out of town) as well as one in each direction on Südring and Zschopauer Straße.
