At the end of October, the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre will be launching a new series focusing on the relationship between sport and politics. Three events will explore the question of whether the integrative power of sport also harbours potential for social cohesion. Do elite and popular sports serve equally as projection surfaces for political messages? How is this perceived in the Chemnitz region?
Participation in the events is free of charge. The events take place at the adult education centre in the TIETZ in course room 4.07 and offer space for discussion. Registration is recommended by the day of the event.

What should sport achieve? A critical-theoretical view
Dr Daniel Ziesche, who researches German and British football cultures at Chemnitz University of Technology, asks what sport should achieve. He takes a critical-theoretical look at the background to the connection between sport and politics: How do political actors influence sports clubs? What is the significance of the idea of "non-political sport"? And is it even possible to separate sport and social developments? The lecture will also look beyond professional sport to developments in the amateur sector.

Sport and politics: a practical perspective
In his lecture "Sport and Politics: A Practical Perspective", Matthias Keussen will describe regional experiences in amateur sport in Chemnitz. Using the sports club Athletic Sonnenberg, on whose board the speaker is active, as an example, the influence of personal attitudes on actions there will also become clear. The event will shed light on the role sport can play in social change. People involved in the club will talk about the background to its creation, its self-image and everyday life between the football pitch, neighbourhood politics and educational work.

In dialogue: Chemnitz and basketball
At the end of the series, the focus will be on the up-and-coming role of basketball in the Chemnitz sports landscape. Under the title "In dialogue: Chemnitz and basketball", the regional social role of basketball will be discussed. The dialogue partner is Andre Zimpel, who with the "Chemnitz Basketball" project and the "I AM ..." series is deeply rooted in the Chemnitz basketball scene. Basketball can open up spaces for social and cultural diversity. At the same time, the question arises as to where sport reaches its limits. What role do social structures play? And is the sports field really free of politics?
