On Friday, 18 August at 2 p.m., Lord Mayor Sven Schulze will ceremonially hand over the keys to the school management in the atrium of the newly built secondary school on Hartmannplatz.

All Chemnitz residents and representatives of the media are cordially invited.

The handover of the keys will be accompanied by an open day, during which interested parties will be offered guided tours of the new building. However, participation is only possible after registration, which can be made via the City of Chemnitz's participation portal. The registration deadline is 16 August.

The tours start at around 2.20 pm and last approx. 30 minutes each. They end at 5 pm at the latest. The Chemnitz skater group "Rollkeaper" will be demonstrating their skills on site from 1.30 pm.

Background

The new four-form secondary school in the city centre has a gross floor area of 10,100 square metres with classrooms and group rooms, specialist cabinets as well as break and social areas, an assembly hall and a library. A cookery kitchen with canteen was installed to ensure a healthy and varied diet. The site covers a total of 21,500 square metres.

In future, almost 700 pupils in grades 5 to 10 will be able to learn and do sport together in 24 classes. The school will be occupied by three fifth classes from the 2023/2024 school year and will gradually be utilised to its planned capacity.

The construction project was preceded by a two-stage architectural competition, the winning design of which was chosen in June 2018. The construction decision on 30 October 2019 was followed by the go-ahead for the start of construction on 9 March 2020.
