New residents on the Huftierberg: maned wolves
Chemnitz Zoo: Offers and opening hours on public holidays
Last week, the staff at Chemnitz Zoo welcomed two new residents. The two almost one-year-old female maned wolves arrived in Chemnitz from Salzburg Zoo on 3 December.
The two sisters now live in the former sika deer enclosure opposite the Bactrian camels. This enclosure was completely redesigned after the keeping of Vietnam sika deer was discontinued. Now the new attractive species enriches the hoofed animal mountain at Chemnitz Zoo.
The maned wolf is the largest dog in South America. The species is found in Argentina, Brazil and Peru, among other places. Contrary to what the name suggests, the maned wolf is only distantly related to the wolf. In fact, it has now been established that it is not more closely related to any other living wild dog. This is also reflected in the species' way of life.
Maned wolves do not live in packs, but only in pairs or occasionally individually outside the mating season. In addition, maned wolves are not hunters. They tend to lie in wait for their prey, as we know from cats, for example.
Despite their size, maned wolves do not prey on large animals, but feed on small animals such as insects and birds, as well as rabbits and armadillos. Vegetable food, such as the fruit of the so-called wolf apple, also makes up a relatively large proportion of their diet.
Offers and opening hours on public holidays
In order to shorten the wait for presents on 24 December and still be able to pay a visit to the zoo and wildlife park inhabitants, all children (up to the age of 16, access to the facilities only when accompanied by an adult) have free admission to Chemnitz Zoo and the Oberrabenstein Wildlife Park on 24 December. There will also be a small treat (while stocks last).
On Christmas Eve, 24 December, and New Year's Eve, 31 December, the zoo and wildlife park will only be open from 9 am to 2 pm. Last admission is at 1 pm.
On the Christmas holidays (25 and 26 December), from 27 to 30 December and on New Year's Day, the zoo will be open as usual from 9 am to 4 pm, with last admission at 3 pm.

9 a.m. to 2 p.m., last admission 1 p.m.
