New residents at the zoo
The first offspring have arrived at the zoo this year. At the beginning of January, two chicks hatched among the noble parrots. As the chicks, like all parrots, are nestlings, they are currently still being cared for by both parents in the breeding den. Noble parrots can reproduce throughout the year and, under favourable conditions, breed twice a year. The two to three eggs are incubated by the female alone for three to four weeks. The male provides it with food during this time.
Offspring are always a speciality with parrots. Although parrots are very social, a harmonious pair must first find each other. In this respect, it can happen that they do not produce offspring. However, once a pair has found each other, the bond will last a lifetime. Parrots are largely monogamous. Outside of the breeding season, many species live in large flocks. At Chemnitz Zoo, however, the noble parrots breed regularly.
As young birds, parrots are inconspicuous. They only become so colourful when they are older. Noble parrots have a special feature in terms of colour: the sexes differ from each other in colour: the males have predominantly green plumage, while the females have red-blue plumage. The difference between the sexes can also be seen in the young birds. However, only the dark-coloured down feathers of the offspring at the zoo have yet become pronounced.
